Sleep
Overview:
Do you battle with sleepless nights?
When you eventually fall asleep do you struggle to stay asleep?
You’re not alone. Insomnia is a common problem, with around 1 in 3 UK adults experiencing it weekly. Sleep disorders affect millions of people all over the world including Sleep Paralysis, Sleep Terrors, Nightmares, Sleep Walking, Restless Leg Syndrome and Sleep Apnea.
But just because sleep disorders are common, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t harmful. Sleep is a fundamental biological need, not a choice or a luxury. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to impaired cognitive function, increased risk of chronic diseases, and even reduced lifespan.
When we lose out on sleep our daily life is impacted. We can’t concentrate and we experience mood swings. Those closest to us often bear the brunt as we get stuck in cycles of exhaustion fuelling conflict.
Sleep is essential for both our physical and mental health, allowing our bodies and minds to rest and repair. Sleep is vital for a healthy immune system, helping the body fight off infections and illnesses. We all know how incredible a good night sleep can feel. When we sleep our memories are consolidated, toxins and waste products from the brain are cleared, supporting our ability to cognitively function. Sleep helps regulate our hormones that control appetite and metabolism, preventing weight gain and weight related health issues.
If you can’t sleep you don’t have to suffer in silence. Hypnotherapy can help you relax deeply and sleep peacefully.

Science:
The science of Insomnia is a complex field.
Insomnia is linked to a state of increased arousal during sleep. Physiological Hyperarousal involves an elevated heart rate, increased metabolic rate, and heightened activity in the sympathetic nervous system.
Cognitive Hyperarousal is characterised by racing thoughts and looping worries which can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Negative emotions, perfectionism and emotional dysregulation all contribute towards Emotional Hyperarousal that disrupts sleep.
Insomnia is believed to also result from disruptions in either or both of your Process S (sleep drive) and Process C (circadian rhythm) within the Two-Process Model. Factors like light exposure, melatonin, and social routines affect the regulation of sleep.
To improve your sleep, it's helpful to understand the science behind it and to implement healthy sleep habits, both of which we can explore in more detail together during hypnotherapy sessions.
