Pain

Overview:

In April 2023, the UK’s Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) called for healthcare staff to give patients hypnosis recordings to help them manage their anxiety pre-operation and reduce their need for sedation during surgery.

In 2006, a live television broadcast captured a British woman, Pippa Plaisted, as she underwent the removal of a skin tumour with hypnosis as the sole anaesthetic. Pippa underwent the surgery completely pain-free with no increase in her heart rate or blood pressure. After the surgery, Pippa reported feeling no pain and was discharged without any complications.

Pain is far more than just a physical sensation. It’s a complex and multi-dimensional experience involving sensory, emotional, and cognitive elements. Pain can be acute (short-term) or persistent (chronic) and hypnotherapy can help with both types.

The brain plays a crucial role in interpreting pain signals. When evaluating pain cues, the brain’s response can vary from immediate reflex actions to more complex emotional and cognitive responses. The brain takes into account your past experiences of pain, your current emotional state and your beliefs about how you can (or can’t) manage pain, before deciding how to respond.

This is why hypnotherapy is highly successful at helping people holistically manage their pain by reducing the way in which pain is anticipated, perceived, processed and responded to.

Through deep relaxation and the reframing of emotions, your pain perception can be altered freeing you to enjoy a pain-free life.

Facts:

  • Approximately 43% of UK adults experience chronic pain, which is pain lasting longer than three months.

  • Chronic pain is more common in women than men.

  • Pain and mental health are interconnected. Pain affects mental health and mental health affects how we experience pain.
