Can Hypnotherapy Heal Heartbreak?

Heartbreak is a specific kind of grief - I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

There’s no funeral. No sympathy cards. No official bereavement leave.

But suddenly, someone who was once woven into the fabric of your life is gone - just like that.

And that can be intensely painful, whether you ended the relationship, they did, or somehow it simply fell apart.

As a hypnotherapist, I work with many people who find that one of the most frustrating parts of the process is that they logically know the relationship has ended. They may have consciously accepted it, but another part of them hasn't quite caught up yet.

Here are 5 ways hypnotherapy can help.

1. Pink Elephants

One of the things I often do with clients is work with a feelings wheel - a wonderfully detailed wheel containing hundreds of different emotions. Because heartbreak isn't simply feeling sad. It’s more often than not incredibly complicated. You might feel:

Angry.

Rejected.

Relieved.

Lonely.

Confused.

Hopeful.

Jealous.

Guilty.

Lost.

Free.

Abandoned.

Numb.

And sometimes you can feel several of these emotions within the same five minutes.

We “name it to tame it” because “what resists persists” - it’s an important part of the process to make space for how you actually feel (and not how you wish you felt.)

Here’s the thing. it’s not simply about “getting over it” (I wish it was as simple as that but it isn’t.) There can be enormous pressure after a breakup to “move on.” But there's a big problem with trying to force an emotion away.

There's a psychological idea called ironic process theory, demonstrated by the famous pink elephant metaphor or white bear experiment. If I tell you:

“Whatever you do, don't think about a pink elephant.”

What are you thinking about?

Exactly.

The harder we try not to think about something, the more our brain brings it back into our awareness.

So rather than telling yourself: “I must stop thinking about them” we can try something different.

We can look at the motion... but we don't have to stare.

We acknowledge the grief without allowing it to become the entirety of our world.

2. Yellow Cars

Let's continue with our pink elephant metaphor. I've told you not to think about a pink elephant (which means undoubtedly you’re thinking about a pink elephant) so, how do we break this cycle?

Your brain needs something else to focus on. So, let's give it something.

If you've read some of my other blogs, you'll know I'm slightly obsessed with the Yellow Car Theory.

Remember playing the yellow car game as a child? The moment you start looking for yellow cars on a long car journey, suddenly they're everywhere!

That's because your brain has systems involved in filtering incoming information and directing your attention towards things that are relevant. One of these systems is called the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Heartbreak can work in a similar way. When you're hurting, your brain can become very good at finding evidence of the loss and filtering out everything else.

The couple holding hands in the park.

The empty side of the bed.

The TV shows you used to watch with your ex.

Because your brain is scanning for reminders of the loss, it can feel as though everything is reminding you of the loss.

In a hypnotherapy session we will gently guide your brain to notice other things too.

The friend who made you laugh.

The beautiful sunset.

The presentation that went well at work.

The coffee that hit the spot.

The book that re-sparked your hope.

What we repeatedly pay attention to matters.

3. Gratitude

I encourage my clients to keep a simple gratitude journal. Each day, write down:

3 things you're grateful for.

3 things you've achieved.

3 things you're looking forward to.

When we're hurting, our brains can become incredibly focused on what's missing. Gratitude gives us an opportunity to deliberately notice what is still here. And this is not about pretending the heartbreak isn't there - it's just about gradually widening the lens.

It's simply about widening the lens, so that the heartbreak isn't the only thing your brain is noticing.

Sometimes the things you're grateful for will be huge.

Sometimes they'll be incredibly small.

A good cup of coffee.

A funny conversation.

Getting outside.

Changing the bedsheets.

Making it through a difficult day.

It all counts.

4. Process the Past

Often, an old wound around rejection, abandonment or feeling “not good enough” can be stirred up by the end of a relationship.

Perhaps part of you is asking:

Why wasn't I enough?

Why did they leave me?

What's wrong with me?

This is where the deeper work of hypnotherapy can become really powerful. In a hypnotherapy session, we might work with your inner guide or explore the idea of your inner child to work with these difficult, historic feelings on a deeper level. Rather than fighting those parts of ourselves, we can begin to listen to them.

What do they need?

What are they afraid of?

What would it feel like to reassure them that you are here now?

Sometimes healing is about working with the past, present and the future.

5. Embrace the Future

Perhaps the biggest misconception about healing from heartbreak is that the goal is to stop caring.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

Sometimes healing means being able to remember someone without your entire body reacting.

Sometimes it means being able to think about the relationship with tenderness rather than pain.

Sometimes it means accepting that something mattered deeply and still choosing to move forward.

You don't have to erase the past.

You can make space for the grief whilst gently making space for something new.

We can honour what happened and at the same time begin imagining what comes next.

Through hypnosis, we use visualisation and imaginative rehearsal to immerse ourselves in a picture of that future.

What might your life look like six months from now?

What might you be doing?

Who might you be spending time with?

What might feel possible again?

You don't need to have all the answers.

It starts with one small step towards the life you want to create.

Because there is a whole life waiting for you beyond this moment.
